9 Berlin Christmas Markets That Are Open After Christmas
Traditionally Christmas markets have their last day on December 22nd, 23rd, or 24th. After all, they were originally meant for doing your Christmas shopping. But times have changed, plus Berlin doesn’t always follow the rules, and now you can find some Christmas markets in Berlin open after Christmas.
In German, the time between Christmas and New Year’s is called Zwischen den Jahren, or between the years. It’s almost like a time between one year and the next. And while most Berlin Christmas markets have closed down by this point, there are still a handful where you can enjoy some holiday cheer.
Christmas markets are my favorite part of winter in Berlin so it’s nice to have a few that keep running after Christmas. It gives me a few more days of Glühwein fun before Christmas season is officially over.
Where to stay in Berlin for Christmas markets
The Christmas markets in Berlin that are open the last week of December are spread out all over the city, so there are lots of options for hotels near Berlin Christmas markets. If there are specific markets you’re interested in, consider finding a hotel near those.
Mitte is the central district of the city, it’s near most of the major attractions, and it’s well connected to anywhere you want to go. So for a Christmas market trip to Berlin, this might be your best option. Here are a few hotels we recommend.

Berlin Christmas Market Tours
Taking tour can be a fun way to see some of the best Christmas markets in Berlin with a guide who will give you information and history. It also eliminates any worries about getting lost or missing out on the best things at the markets.
Here are a few tours we recommend:
- Christmas In Berlin: Private Experience With A City Host: This private tour will show you some of Berlin’s best Christmas markets, and it’s customizable. A free mug of Glühwein is included.
- Berlin Christmas Markets Culinary Tour: On this tour, you’ll get 6 food tastings at local Berlin Christmas markets, plus try a mug of Glühwein and hot chocolate with whiskey. This one does not run after Christmas, but it’s a good option if you’re here before Christmas.

Christmas Market on Gendarmenmarkt (Bebelplatz)
One of the most popular Christmas markets in Berlin, this one is normally held on the Gendarmenmarkt square. But due to construction, it’s being held at nearby Bebelplatz for a few years. Don’t worry, it’s just as pretty and festive.

It’s officially called WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt. There’s a 1 euro entrance fee, but it’s well worth the cost. This market is really charming, and it’s such a nice setting, even at the temporary location.
And if you get here before 2pm on most days, it’s actually free. On weekends, December 24-26, and December 31, you have to pay the entrance fee all day.
You’ll find lots of stalls where you can buy Christmas decorations, gifts, or souvenirs to remember your trip to Berlin. Plus there are plenty of options for delicious food and drinks.
And luckily this Christmas market continues to operate through New Year’s Eve.

Charlottenburg Palace
You couldn’t ask for a better Christmas market setting than in front of a palace. This is one of the most beautiful Berlin Christmas markets, and definitely one of my favorites. In last 2022, they announced it would be their final year, but luckily it’s been saved and renewed for 2023 and 2024.

The Schloss Charlottenburg Christmas market has a good mix of food, drinks, and gifts stalls for you to browse through. The market is closed on December 24th, but opens back up again from December 25-31. In fact, this is where my husband and I normally go for dinner on Christmas Day.
The palace is a little outside the center of Berlin, but it’s worth the extra time in transport. And it’s a great option for a Berlin Christmas market that’s open after Christmas.
Dates: November 27 – December 31, 2023, closed on December 24
Opening times: noon to 10pm
Location: Schloss Charlottenburg, Spandauer Damm 20
Closest transport: U Sophie-Charlotte-Platz, S Westend, Bus 109 or M45 Luisenplatz/Schloss Charlottenburg

Rotes Rathaus
Most of the stalls at the Rotes Rathaus Christmas market are run by one company, so it has a bit of a corporate feel to it. But this is still a lovely Christmas market in Berlin, and it’s open after Christmas Day. It’s very conveniently located just west of the TV Tower, so it’s easy to fit in with your sightseeing.

We like this one for the wide variety of candied almonds, and we try to go at least once each year. It’s also a cute setting with the ice rink in the middle, the big ferris wheel (from Munich), the Neptune Fountain, and the nearby church and TV Tower.
If you’re looking for Christmas markets in Berlin that are open between Christmas and New Year’s, this is a solid choice. It’s also a good one for kids. Note that its last day is December 30th. Check out these tips for the Berlin City Hall Christmas Market.

Breitscheidplatz / Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church
For a festive Christmas market in western Berlin, not far from the Zoo and shopping district, check out the Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz. This is where Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands, and it makes for an interesting backdrop along with the modern buildings nearby.

The church was badly damaged during World War II, but rather than rebuild it, it was left in partial ruins. Now it stands as a reminder of the destruction of war.
The atmosphere here is an interesting mix of modern and historical, but there’s also plenty of holiday cheer. There are also rides that the children will enjoy. And luckily it’s still open between Christmas and New Year’s.

Alexanderplatz
Don’t confuse the Alexanderplatz Christmas market with the Rotes Rathaus Christmas market. They’re located rather close to each other, but they have very different vibes.

This one feels very corporate, and many of the things being sold are normal souvenirs, not even typical Christmas-y things. This isn’t my favorite by any means, and with the Rotes Rathaus one being just a few steps away, I wouldn’t even recommend going to the Alexanderplatz one.
But certainly some people like it, and it is open the day after Christmas. If you do go to this one, it’s easy to switch over to Rotes Rathaus if you decide this isn’t your thing.
Opening dates: November 27 – December 26, 2023

Address: Alexanderplatz
Closest transport: S & U Alexanderplatz

Potsdamer Platz
This one is one of the most kid-friendly Christmas markets in Berlin. It feels kind of like a carnival mixed with a Christmas market, so it’s a little less traditional feeling.

There’s an ice rink and a toboggan run, along with the traditional mulled wine and other Christmas treats. If you’re visiting Berlin with kids, this is a good choice. Even better that it’s still open the last week in December.
Opening dates, Winter World: October 22, 2023 to January 01, 2024
Opening dates, Christmas Market: November 27 to December 26, 2023

Spandau Citadel
In the northwest corner of Berlin is the Spandau district, an area that was once it’s own town. It still has a German village vibe to it, and it doesn’t even feel like you’re in Berlin anymore.

They hold a really nice Christmas market in the old town center and one in front of the town hall building, but they both end a few days before Christmas Day. Luckily the Christmas market at Spandau Citadel continues running through December 30th.
The Christmas market in the Citadel is actually a fairly recent one, meant to be a temporary thing a few years ago. But people loved the setting so much, they’ve continued to operate this market.
Opening dates: November 27, 2023 to December 30, 2023
Opening times: not announced yet
Address: Am Juliusturm 64, 13599 Berlin
Closest transport: U Zitadelle, U Altstadt Spandau

Zehlendorf
Zehlendorf is a neighborhood in southwest Berlin, one you’re unlikely to visit as a tourist. It’ll take you 25 minutes on the S1 from Brandenburger Tor to get here. But if you’re looking for another Christmas market in Berlin that’s open between Christmas and New Year’s, add the Zehlendorf Christmas market to your list.

At this market you’ll find a cozy local atmosphere with lots of sweets, mulled wine, gifts and more. There’s also an ice skating rink you can enjoy for a small fee. On the weekends, there are stage performances.
This is definitely an off the beaten path Berlin Christmas market, but one you can enjoy the last week in December.
Opening dates: November 27, 2023 to December 30, 2023
Opening times: not announced yet
Address: Kirchstraße 1, 14163 Berlin
Closest transport: S Zehlendorf

Humboldt Forum
In 2023, there will be a new Christmas market in Berlin, and it’s one that stays open after Christmas Day. And actually, it’s listed as staying open until January 7th, which is quite late.

You can find it in front of the Humboldt Forum and in the courtyard of this free Berlin museum. Since it’s new, I don’t have much to report yet, but it’s sure to have the traditional stalls selling mulled wine, food, sweets, and gifts.
Opening dates: December 01, 2023 to January 07, 2024
Opening times: not announced yet
Address: Schlossplatz, 10178 Berlin
Closest transport: U Museumsinsel

Berlin Christmas markets open Christmas Day
If you’re visiting Berlin at Christmastime, it can be hard to find restaurants that are open on the holidays. But luckily the markets I’ve listed here are open on Christmas Day.
So even though it’s not as fancy as a sit down meal, having your Christmas dinner at a Christmas market is quite festive. This is what we do most years since we don’t have family here.
Note that the Charlottenburg Palace and Rotes Rathaus Christmas markets are closed on December 24th.
